an all nippon airways boeing 787 has made an emergency landing. the officials at takamatse airport say the crew detected smoke. the officials say the plane was heading from an airport in yamaguchi prefecture, western japan, to hanada airport in tokyo. it was carrying 129 passengers and eight crew members. airline officials say they evacuated the plane shortly after landing. authorities at the airport closed the runway. officials at the departing airport say they didn't notice anything unusual before the plane took off. dreamliners have suffered a series of technical problems this month, including a battery fire and several fuel leaks. >>> two explosions have torn through a university in aleppo, northern syria. activists say 83 people were killed, dozens wounded. it's not clear who is behind the attack. the explosions blew the walls off buildings at the university of aleppo and set cars on fire. government and opposition forces have competing narratives of what happened. the state-run news agency blamed opposition fighters. it said what it called terrorists fired rockets, killing studen

. bob, good morning. >> reporter: good morning. all nipon and japan airways have grounded their boeing 787 dreamliner aircraft for safety inspections. that means this morning's flight between normanetta and tokyo have been cancelled. this was less than a week after the route went into service with much fanfare and hope for the south bay economy. here's what prompted the latest grounding yesterday. the only grounding so far. yesterday one of the 787 dream liners had to make an emergency landing in japan after a cockpit message warned of a battery problem. a japanese tv crew was on board, captured the evacuation which appeared to go smoothly. japan's transport ministry says this was a serious incident that could have resulted in an accident. in an e-mail to blumberg news boeing is aware of what happened and is working with customers. here in the united states there have been other problems including a battery fire and fuel leak which prompted the faa to review a safety review of all 787 aircraft. on friday, normanetta joined truck reid and the u.s. ambassador to japan to celebrate the la

administration is pledging to work with boeing and in the united states with united airways, the the operator of the planes at the moment, to work at what is going on, in particular with these lithium batteries to see whether there is a flaw or a serious fire risk spreading through the rest of the aircraft. what is not clear is what happens to the 787's operated by all the airline that does listed that are operating outside of the united states. the faa has no authority over them, but what normally happens is because most of the airlines if not all of them fly into u.s. air space at one point or another, the airlines usually acquiesce and do not fly the planes while the temporary ban is going on here in the u.s. aerospace. it is potentially a very serious problem for boeing of seattle and chicago. >> thank you very much. is trying toitary secure the release of dozens of foreign workers kidnapped and gas facility in the east. people have been killed after citizens from norway, the u.k., united states, and japan were taken. the group that carried out the attack claims it is a revenge for french

that going along the bottom, boeing 787. andrew and michelle, i've got the memorandum from al nippon airways. here's the circumstances of the event. and i would call up a boeing chart because almost a lot of the dow weakness is in boeing. boeing closed at 7,694. it fight 73.45 to 73.66. on this flight the aircraft carriers showed messages related to the battery at 88:37 a.m. at 30,000 feet. it doesn't say smoke. there was an unusual smell in the cockpit and cabin. the flight made an emergency landing. later it was confirmed that the main battery in the forward electronic equipment bay was discolored and loelectrolysis solution. there was a leak and smell. as a result, the airline has canceled flights using the 787 on wednesday. no 787 will fly on thursday. and 35 of all the domestic flight will be -- >> this their is -- this is al nippon. >> this is the battery issue. talking about lithium ion batteries. hard to -- >> the stock's going to feel it. we had five straight days of dow gains. and one of the reason the dow is down today is because that's, you know, a three-point loss on -- about al

on this news that all nippon airways and japan airlines grounded its dreamliners. now shares of boeing are down 2% in the premarket so that's piling on that sort of taken on the chin effect. this is really the biggest setback for the new planes that began flying back in late 2001, but this is a plane that's really endured plenty of issues before. aviation experts believe the long-term fallout is limited. boeing says they are confident the 787 is safe and saying we stand behind its overall integrity. we will be taking every necessary step in the coming days to assure our customers and the traveling public of the 787's safety and to return the air planes to service. all of the dreamliners, carol, that were in service, all 50 of them are no longer flying. boeing has over 800 firm orders for the dreamliner from various airlines. british airways is expecting to get its first dreamliner later this year. it issued a statement saying they remain committed to taking delivery of their first boeing 787 earlier this year. that's good news for boeing. >> alison kosik reporting live for the new york stock ex

a manufacturing defect caused the battery in an all nippon airways 787 to burn up. if that proves to be the case, boeing may find the fix is straight forward. but if the problem is the lithium battery technology itself, boeing faces a more difficult engineering challenge. >> lithium ion batteries have a lot of power and of course there are many types of batteries out there and hopefully a substitute can be found, but nothing is absolutely set in stone at this point. >> reporter: boeing might be able to design a container to prevent or protect fires caused by the lithium batteries. but if the company is forced to use older, larger batteries, engineers would have to re- design parts of the 787. investigators have reached no conclusions, but they will certainly be taking a hard look at every aspect of the 787's battery. >> i think that the amount of problems there have been with lithium batteries historically would have to lead one to believe that you're not going to certificating airplane, you're not going to just say this was a bad batch, bring on the next batch until somebody figures out that i
